The Message of Harold Kerzner to the

3rd Project Management Conference in Iran

 

I congratulate holding the 3rd Project Management Conference in Iran & I am so sorry that I am unable to attend the 3rd IIPMC Conference because it is final exam week at my college.

Project management has evolved from an optional process within a firm to a series of integrated processes necessary to maintain the competitiveness and existence of the company. Companies now believe that everything within the firm is characterized as a project and that managing the entire business is being seen as series of projects.

Historically, project managers were paid to make project decisions exclusively. Today, project managers are expected to make business decisions as well as project decisions. Project managers are now viewed as managing part of a business rather than just a project. Project managers are being converted into businesspeople rather than merely experts in project execution.

Some of the current changes in the way we view project management include:

  • Developing of an enterprise-wide project management methodology
  • Creation of software for the portfolio management of projects
  • Performing organizational capacity planning using the enterprise project management methodology
  • Seeking out ways to accelerate to organizational project management maturity process
  • Capturing best practices in project management
  • Creating a project management best practices library
  • Performing worldwide project management benchmarking studies
  • Measuring the return on investment for project management training
  • Marrying project management and Six Sigma
  • Looking for better ways to reward project teams
  • Looking for ways to better manage virtual project management teams

Projects have become quite large and multinational. People from around the world must learn how to work together as an integrated team in order to meet the needs of all stakeholders, whether they are companies, governments, nations or continents. Perhaps in the future the well-proven principles of project management can be applied to governments and politics such that teamwork will prevail for the benefit of all parties, resulting in the removal of political barriers.

With more than 1000 participants, you have clearly demonstrated the need for and interest in project management worldwide. My best wishes to all on a successful conference.
